Introducing Jared Stone

2015 Australian Apprentice of the Year, and Good to Go Ambassador

In 2011, Jared Stone beat out 750 applicants to join the Western Power Apprentice Program. As an apprentice, Jared completed a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician and Certificate IV in Engineering (Instrumentation).

In 2015, his final year as an apprentice, Jared received national recognition for his efforts when he won the Australian Apprentice of the Year Award. The prestigious Australian Apprentice of the Year Award is presented to an apprentice who has been outstanding in all aspects of their trade. Among his achievements, Jared was recognised for being a keen advocate for skilled based careers. Jared believes there is a strong need for initiatives to encourage young people to turn their passions into careers through the flexible training offered by vocational education and training.

But the apprenticeship journey wasn’t all smooth sailing for Jared. While handling the dual challenges of learning a new job and studying for his certifications, Jared was also battling depression. Jared has shared his story in the hope it will help others struggling with poor mental health to realise that they are not alone.
