Apprentice is a Cut Above

Kenny and Linda had finally been given the opportunity they dreamed of – opening a hair salon in a shopping centre. While they already owned and operated a salon in the Perth CBD, they really wanted to be part of a shopping community, so when Caversham Shopping Centre announced it would be opening its doors in April 2016, the couple jumped at the chance to be part of the new venture.

Up and running in time to coincide with the centre’s grand opening, Kenny and Linda were naturally on the lookout for quality staff. Over a number of months they employed a string of qualified hairdressers, but found they had to let some go due to a lack of professionalism or poor work ethic. They decided to change tactics, looking to employ an apprentice instead, who could grow with the business and continue to work with them for many years to come.

Kenny and Linda quickly got in contact with The Apprenticeship Community. After discussing their needs with The Apprenticeship Community’s Industry Training Consultant, Chloe Gill, they decided to place an ad on Apprenticeship Central. ,

Apprenticeship Central is a free job search site dedicated to apprenticeships and traineeships. It allows employers to place ads for available roles, and for job seekers to apply directly with the click of a button. The site also helps job seekers to prepare their resumes and provides tips for making the most of interview opportunities.

One of the candidates who applied for the role in the salon was Nar, who had switched from graphic design to study hairdressing which was his true passion. Nar had already completed his Certificate II in Hairdressing and was looking for an apprenticeship to continue his career journey. Noting his credentials and his clear passion for the industry, The Apprenticeship Community’s Career and Placement Advisor, Melissa, referred Nar to Kenny and Linda to see if he would be a fit for the role.

Kenny and Linda were impressed with the fact Nar already had practical skills under his belt and offered him a trial in the salon. Soon after, they offered Nar the apprenticeship position, and they are delighted with his progress. Like all new apprentices, Nar was paired with an Apprenticeship Community Mentor, to ensure his transition into work ran smoothly and so he had a contact should anything arise that might impact his work or study. She is happy to report that Nar has settled in very well and is really enjoying his work.

Kenny and Linda were so happy with the service and support they received from Chloe and Melissa they are now in the process of signing up a second apprentice.
